Ever wonder about Maine’s world class oysters, how they’re raised, who raises them, why they taste so good, and how Maine feeds the world with them?
Join us on land as we embark on our Oyster Lovers Walking Tour through Portland’s historic waterfront and Old Port.
Maine has been harvesting oysters for a long time, and now there are over 150 farms along our 3,500 miles of rugged coastline growing a wide and delicious variety. Oysters here grow slowly, soaking up the flavors of the sea and influenced by their water temperature and salinity.
Your guide will educate you on the life and growth of oysters, their history, and curative powers as you enjoy several varieties both shucked for you and served at area restaurants.
The details:
We will gather for your 2 hour walk right outside Portland’s famous Harbor Fish Market where you will meet your guide. Then we will walk together along Casco bay stopping along the way to shuck oysters on the waterfront and tell stories about Maine’s oyster and commercial fishing industry, its award winning aquaculture and sustainable practices as well some of Portland’s history as far back as 1632!
After enjoying fresh shucked oysters on the waterfront, the movable tasting continues. We will then visit a restaurant or two to enjoy more oysters served in creative ways, paired with an adult beverage.

Due to Portland’s dedication to historic preservation this tour is not fully handicap accessible for wheelchairs or walkers.

We recommend a parking garage or lot. The least expensive parking is approx. a 10-15 minute walk from the meeting point for this tour. The closest garage is the Custom House Square parking garage at 25 Pearl Street for $5.00/hour.

Well behaved pups are welcome to join the tour if we are given notice, Please note in your booking if you’re bringing your fur baby with you.

Tours do run rain and shine.
- With tour insurance: To cancel your tour tickets you must purchase our tour insurance for $5.99 per ticket. This allows you to cancel your tickets for any reason up to 24 hours prior to the start time of the tour and receive a refund for the cost of the tickets minus the booking fee and insurance.
- Without tour insurance: If you do not purchase the tour insurance you have up to 24 hours prior to the start time of the tour to cancel and receive a gift certificate for future use.
- Within 24 hours: We don’t extend refunds or gift certificates within 24 hours of the start time of the tour.
